Experts Say What..?

"National health agencies recognize physical activity as a key component of health and well-being. Physical activity strengthens the musculoskeletal system, reduces stress, improves mood, and helps to maintain a healthy body weight.  It has also been shown to lower rates of many serious chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Lack of physical activity can lead to adverse health effects such as obesity, poor cardiovascular function, poor mobility and balance, and social and emotional isolation.  People with mitochondrial disease have an increased risk for many of these chronic conditions. Exercise is medicine!

In addition to the increased risk of other chronic diseases, people with mitochondrial disease face increased challenges due to a scarcity of places to exercise safely.  A place like this would require many features not found in a typical fitness facility.  A specialized fitness center would have adaptive exercise equipment and adequate floor space to accommodate assistive devices and wheelchairs. Staff would be trained to assist clients in getting on and off exercise equipment.  Physical facilities and policies should meet and exceed basic ADA standards to serve a client base of people who all have physical disabilities.  There is a critical need for a fitness facility of this type to serve those with all types of mitochondrial diseases."

"I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA), a primary mitochondrial disease, when I was 16-years-old, and was wheelchair-bound by age 21. In the more than 17 years since I stopped walking, I have extensively researched natural treatments, and obtained a Ph.D. in Natural Medicine from Kingdom College of Natural Health. I regularly engage in weight training and aerobic exercise. I also follow a supplementation protocol that includes a multitude of vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds. As a result, I have not only maintained but improved my muscle mass and strength. Even though I am genetically more predisposed to developing diabetes and cardiomyopathy, I have signs of neither. Despite the fact that I am supposed to suffer from fatigue, I engage in physical activity for extended periods and do not need to rest during the day. I have been told many times that '[I] don’t do FA correctly.' I have exercise to thank for that."

“At age 13, I was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia (FA). This, along with other mitochondrial diseases, has no known cure. After loads of research, I learned that nutrition and exercise can help to slow the progression. Since then, I have dedicated my life to all aspects of nutrition and exercise in an attempt to slow my own progression. A few years back I created @conqueringfa on Instagram. Here, I show all health/fitness tips that are helping me conquer FA.

Exercise is a huge component of my life. It helps to keep my muscles strong and prevent the speed of deterioration. Also, I love the mental stress relief I get from working out! Having accessible gym equipment is a huge bonus! So many gyms are difficult to work out in. Using a wheelchair does not mean you can't work out. Modifications and specialized equipment are just around the corner :)

Flash forward to today, it has been more than 10 years since I was diagnosed, and I am still thriving! I work at my local wellness center as a Certified Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor (I LOVE my job). I became a CPT to learn more about how exercise could help me and others. I am grateful that I can share my own experience with FA, and help others to become their healthiest self! I live in central MN with my husband, dog, and cat. I enjoy exercising (of course), creating new recipes, gardening, and fishing!”
